How do I know if I'm ready to run a race?
Often, when we see the word “compete”, we associate it with stress, performance and hard effort, and we give up on taking part in a race. Being clear about what motivates us, and finding a good professional to guide us on how to tackle our challenge, can help us take the plunge and sign up for a race.
- The most sensible guidelines to get started would be:
– Choose the distance/race you'd like to take part in; ideally, start with a short distance of no more than 5km.
– Allow at least 3 months to prepare properly
– Set aside at least 2 days a week for your training.
– If you want to take on distances over 10km, like a half marathon or a marathon, you need to set aside at least 4 days a week, and you should have been running for a year.
– If your goal is to train for track events, your best bet is to get in touch with a club or a coach who can advise you on which event suits you best.
If you know you want to give it a try, go for it – don't be left wondering. And if you have any questions, you know you can ask us and we'll advise you on what's best for your needs. Come on, give it a go – there's no harm in trying! 😉
